Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

RensCo Chamber First Tenant At Proctor's Troy

A Troy landmark has a new lease on life and a new tenant.

Proctor's was built in the early 20th century for vaudeville performances by Capital District entrepreneur Frederick F. Proctor, who built another theater with his name in nearby Schenectady. The theater flourished for decades, but closed in 1977. The city of Troy acquired the property through foreclosure a year later.

In the early 2000s, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute acquired the building, hoping to use it partially for office space while keeping the theater.

Second Change Of Venue Sought In Berkshire Triple Slaying Case

The second of three defendants in a gruesome Berkshire County triple slaying is scheduled to stand trial in April, but where the trial will take place is yet to be determined.

The triple-murder trial of David Chalue was scheduled for April 22nd but the location remains to be determined after Chalue’s lawyer argued a motion to move the trial out of Springfield. The sensational case has already had one change of venue – it was moved from Berkshire County to Hampden County because of publicity.

Democratic Candidates Launch Campaigns For State Senate In New York's 49th District

Two candidates vying for the Democratic spot in the race for New York’s sprawling 49th Senate District are kicking their campaigns into gear.

New York’s 49th Senate District, stretching from Schenectady and Saratoga Counties up through Fulton, Herkimer, and Hamilton, has long been held by Republican Hugh Farley. Come November, two Democratic candidates are hoping to take his place.

Candidate Madelyn Thorne ran against Farley in 2012. Two years on, Thorne said she’s continued to travel the region, and believes her support in the Republican controlled district is growing.
