Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Blair Horner: Big Tobacco Rises From The Ashes Again

It wasn’t long ago when it seemed that the tobacco lobby’s stranglehold over New York policymaking was finally broken.  In addition to federal court decisions, state actions were being taken.  During the years of the Pataki Administration, the state raised its tobacco tax, enacted one of the nation’s most sweeping restrictions on smoking in public places and in work environments. The Spitzer Administration bolstered funding for the state’s tobacco control efforts, helping it rise to the 5th most well-resourced program in the nation.  In the Paterson Administration, New York raised its tobacco tax rate to the highest in the nation.

Hampshire College Prof. Honored By Hollywood

Hampshire College professor Chris Perry is in Los Angeles where he will be honored tomorrow at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ annual technical awards presentation. Perry, and three former colleagues, will receive a Technical Achievement Award for developing a software application for computer graphics animation.  The technology has been used in more than 100 feature films including Life of Pi and Golden Compass – Oscar winners for Best Visual Effects.   Perry spoke with WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill.

Saratoga County District Attorney Announces Bid For County Court Judge

The District Attorney of Saratoga County announced Friday that he will be running for a new office.

Surrounded by his Republican colleagues at a press conference in Saratoga Springs, longtime district attorney James Murphy III formally announced that he is running for a new office.

“I am very, very pleased and privileged today to announce my candidacy for Saratoga County Court Judge,” said Murphy.
