Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

New York Lawmakers Push For Public Financing Of Elections

Three New York Congressmen have joined forces in an effort to fight big money in elections.

Last week the House Democrats introduced a bill to create public financing of elections for federal elections. Just two weeks before that, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his intention to create publicly financed elections for the state legislature and for all statewide offices.

Glens Falls Hospital Joins Adirondack Health Institute

Glens Falls Hospital has joined a regional partnership with a mission to cut healthcare costs through collaboration.

Glens Falls Hospital was recently welcomed as a new member of the Adirondack Health Institute.

AHI, formed in 2011, is a member organization including Community Providers, Inc., a related party to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, Adirondack Health, which operates Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, and Hudson Headwaters Health Network.

Moving from New York City to Raleigh, North Carolina upon ordination was my first serious foray out of a somewhat insular northeastern cocoon and into “real” America.  I was not exactly sheltered until then. I grew up in an ethnically diverse Queens neighborhood, and the inner city public high school I attended was a testing ground for class and racial coexistence.  Still, I thought I knew what difference was until I discovered how different difference could be in the same country, less than five hundred miles south of where I grew up.  The Raleigh and East Carolinas that I remember from the early nineteen nineties were a study in contrasts.  The city is part of an urban powerhouse of cosmopolitanism that attracts people and businesses from all over the world.  Yet it also boasts some of the world’s most rigidly conservative churches and it sits in the midst of the American tobacco farming industry, a very traditionalist, hierarchical culture.

NY Gov Pushes Anti-Violence Programs

With an uptick in the call for community action against gun violence,  New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has fostered the launches of programs aimed at stopping such incidents in their tracks.

Cuomo recently announced seven programs will share more than $2 million in grants designed to reduce gun violence in communities across New York. The initiative promotes street-level outreach and intervention.
