Surgeon General On Smoking: Enough Is Enough

Credit surgeongeneral.gov

Those health warnings on the side of a package or carton of cigarettes are well-established and have become more severe and graphic over the years. That warning from the Surgeon General was the result of a landmark 1964 report by the Surgeon General, establishing a link between cigarettes and heart disease and cancer. Fifty years later, the acting Surgeon General, Rear Admiral Boris Lushniak, says progress has been made, but smoking remains a serious health problem.

As Massachusetts moves closer to issuing the state’s first casino licenses a potential referendum battle is looming.

Anti-casino leaders are busy developing a campaign strategy to persuade Massachusetts voters to repeal the state’s 2011 gaming law that authorized casino gambling. Steve Abdow, a member of the leadership team of the Repeal the Casino Deal ballot initiative said the message will be pretty straightforward.

" It's really a matter of education. If people understand the negative impact and that the casinos won't deliver what is promised."

He believes now is the time to bring a new airline into the Albany mix.  "We're hoping that if Jet Blue were to come to Albany, they could add service to already popular routes. Routes like Washington, Orlando, South Florida or Tampa, and in doing so, connecting residents to more travel destinations."

Michael Meeropol: Pete Seeger Was Great Because Of Not In Spite Of His Politics

Like many in the Hudson Valley, I took the loss of Pete Seeger personally.  He was a great national and international figure having received over 20 honors and awards including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award, the Harvard Arts Medal, the Kennedy Center Honor and been inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame to name a few.   For us who lived in and near Beacon, NY where he had lived for 65 years, he was a local hero.  The sloop Clearwater and the attention it brought to the Hudson River actually led to an actual clean-up of terrible pollution.  Now, the river can be fished and it’s safe for swimming.
