The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

There have been a number of names put forth as potential Democratic candidates to run in New York’s 21st congressional district now that incumbent Bill Owens has announced his retirement. Among the possibilities is Republican Dede Scozzafava. Scozzafava was in Plattsburgh today, and North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley asked if she would run.

Rep. Tonko Tours Local Company To See Growth And Innovation

Congressman Tonko, a Democrat from the 20th district, toured Creatacor, Inc., a company that designs and fabricates displays for trade shows and other corporate events. The company based in Clifton Park employs 56, and this month will complete renovations to its warehouse and corporate offices.

Will Farmer, Vice President of Client Services at Creatator, says the company has expanded multiple times since it was founded in 1987, initially as a spinoff of GE Corporate’s exhibit operation, to a company that now provides services top brands including LEGO and Virgin Atlantic.

MGM Pitches Springfield Casino To State Gaming Regulators

The lone applicant for the western Massachusetts casino license pitched the project to state gaming industry regulators today.  The 90-minute public presentation marked the beginning of an evaluation process that is expected to culminate with the awarding of a casino license in the spring.

   MGM  Resorts International CEO James Murran told the Massachusetts Gaming Commission that even though all competitors have fallen by the wayside, MGM’s Springfield project is the right choice to be awarded a lucrative casino license.

Karen Hitchcock: A Threat to Academic Freedom

Early in my tenure as head of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, I – like many other university presidents – was asked to support the agenda of a Palestinian initiative known as B.D.S., a call for Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel, given the organization’s belief that Israel was not complying with international law and Palestinian rights. Specifically, they were asking for our university’s participation in a boycott of Israeli universities ... a request I unequivocally rejected as being antithetical to the concept of academic freedom which is at the very heart of the mission of a university -           institutions devoted to unfettered inquiry and discovery.

U.S.  Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts is touring the state to promote her agenda for the year ahead.  She stopped in western Massachusetts today.

   Senator Warren met with about 100 constituents in the lobby of the downtown Springfield building where   the senator’s western Massachusetts office is located. Warren spoke about her agenda for the year ahead in Congress, highlighting three priorities—reducing college student loan debt, increasing government funding for medical research and shoring up Social Security.
