Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Proctors Donates Ticket Proceeds To Help Veterans

A Saratoga County organization that uses horses to assist veterans suffering from psychological wounds has received a donation from Proctor’s Theatre from ticket proceeds.

Saratoga WarHorse, a Wilton-based nonprofit received, an $8,900 donation from Proctor’s.

The money is a portion of the ticket sales to the play War Horse, which premiered on the Schenectady stage January 15th.

One film that is drawing attention at award nomination ceremonies is PHILOMENA, the story of a real-life Irish-Catholic woman named Philomena Lee.  The film relates the story a teenager in the 1950s, who met a young man one evening at a fair and wound up having a one-night sexual encounter with him—her first time having sex.  She never saw him again.

New Halfmoon Supervisor Reaches Out To Business Community

The new supervisor of a Capital Region town defined by scandal in 2013 has set out a vision for 2014 focused on economic development.

At an open forum for businesses hosted by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce at Halfmoon Town Hall Thursday, Supervisor Kevin Tollisen outlined his agenda for 2014.  In November, Tollisen was elected to become supervisor in January, but took the supervisor position early after he was appointed by the town board, following the resignation of former supervisor Mindy Wormuth.

NY, 6 Communities Agree On Sewage Cleanup Plan

Sewage pollution in the Hudson River at Albany will be reduced under a $136 million plan announced Thursday by New York State environmental regulators, the city of Albany and five other surrounding communities. 

A cleaner future for the Hudson River in 15 years? Officials say it's do-able. Under an agreement with the Department of Environmental Conservation, a coalition of six communities will upgrade sewer systems to reduce discharges of storm water-diluted sewage after heavy rain.

Sen. Gipson Discusses State Of The State Tax Proposals

In his recent State of the State Address, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo called for a zero percent  corporate income tax for manufacturers tax that locate in upstate New York, but one state Senator from the Hudson Valley says part of his district is being left out. Democrat Terry Gipson of the 41st district says the zero tax should also be offered in the counties that must now pay the MTA payroll tax: Westchester, Putnam, Orange, Rockland and Dutchess.
