The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Governor's Mention Of Discrimination Lawsuit In State Of State Draws Concern From School District

Remarks made by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in his 2014 State of the State address over alleged discrimination at a Hudson Valley school district is stirring controversy.

In his State of the State speech, Governor Cuomo mentioned a federal lawsuit reported in November in the New York Times involving Jewish families claiming their children had experienced numerous counts of anti-semitic discrimination at a high school in Pine Bush, NY.

Keith Strudler: Charlie Strong

Charlie Strong may have had the shortest honeymoon in the history of modern relationships. On Monday, Strong was announced as the new head football coach at the University of Texas, a job that’s been portrayed as ever so slightly more important and prestigious than that of the Pope. By all accounts, it is the premier college football coaching post in the country, although several top candidates from other schools, including Alabama’s Nick Saban and Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher, politely declined an interview. But Strong, straight off a successful run at the helm at Louisville, took the job and its $5 million annual salary. With that, he also gets the potential headache of managing the university’s own sports network and an alumni base as rich as it is powerful. It’s by no means a cakewalk, which is why, as they say, he’ll get paid the big bucks.

U.S. Supreme Court To Hear Arguments Over Abortion Clinic Buffer Zones

The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments one week from today in a case challenging a Massachusetts law that establishes a protest-free zone around abortion clinics.  Thirty groups have filed briefs in the case including Planned Parenthood.

With a focus on addressing income inequality for 2014, a coalition of political action groups gathered Tuesday at noon at the State Capitol State Street entrance for the 24th annual People's State of the State rally.

"Biden is here today. Obama will talk about income and equality. De Blasio will talk about income and equality. But where is our Governor in the most unequal state in the country on income and equality?" That's  Sara Niccoli with the New York State Labor Religion Coalition, leading the call at the People's State of the State rally.

The city council in Springfield Massachusetts will have three new ad hoc committees this year. A special committee created two years ago to advise the council on casino issues has been dissolved

Springfield City Council President Mike Fenton announced appointments to 15 standing committees and assigned councilors to chair three new special committees that will be tasked with identifying new revenue sources for the city, examining workforce development efforts, and attracting young professionals to live in Springfield.
