Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

New Plan for Universal Full-Day Pre-K in NYS

At a time when debate over the Common Core is front and center, pro-education groups are out with a new plan offering a roadmap for full-day universal prekindergarten in New York State.

The Center for Children’s Initiatives and the Campaign for Educational Equity have unveiled a statewide plan that offers a financial strategy that recognizes pre-K as an essential educational service, while providing a plan to phase in pre-K to the state's 3- and 4-year-olds over the next eight years.

Program To Train People For Manufacturing Jobs Doubles Capacity

A new machine to train students at the Springfield Technical Community College Mechanical Engineering Technology Center

Workforce development experts say Massachusetts needs more people trained for jobs in precision manufacturing.  The state is devoting money to the effort.

Springfield Technical Community College recently spent $2 million to upgrade and expand classrooms in its Mechanical Engineering Technology center.   The college received a $1.2 million dollar grant from the state. But it came with one string attached. The college had to double the number of students enrolled in the program that prepares people for careers in manufacturing.

Saratoga Springs Candidates For County Supervisor Meet In Debate

Three candidates for two open seats for County Supervisor for Saratoga Springs participated in a debate Thursday night.

Current supervisor Matthew Veitch is running on the Republican, Conservative, and Independence tickets. Saratoga County Clerk Peter Martin is running on the Democratic, Working Families, and Independence lines, and  Kenneth Ivins, Jr., former Saratoga Springs Finance Commissioner, is running on the Republican and Conservative lines.
