Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

This week, Governor Cuomo unveils his plans for the 2014 legislative session.  The State of the State allows the executive a unique opportunity to command public attention and to mobilize support for his proposals.  Typically, a State of the State address in the first year of any Administration focuses on the need for changes and reforms.  As the governor over time comes to represent the status quo, his or her rhetoric changes and the State of the State becomes a vehicle to extol the achievements of the Administration and to build on the image the governor is trying to project.

New City Council President Sees Busy Year Of Legislating

A new year in municipal government began in Springfield, Massachusetts today with an historic ceremony at city hall.  The new city council and the new city council president are both “ firsts” for  Springfield

The city council sworn in Monday morning is the first in Springfield’s history where a majority of the councilors are black or Hispanic—a makeup that mirrors the city’s population which is 61 percent non-white.  The new president of the city council Mike Fenton turned 27 yesterday and is the youngest council president in the city’s history.

Michael Meeropol: Paying Unemployment Insurance Is Not Just A Moral Issue

As I speak, approximately 1.3 million of the long-term unemployed have exhausted their benefits --- they now receive nothing to bolster their spending. To some, this is an outrageous betrayal of the fundamental decency that is at the core of the best of America’s moral traditions. To others, it is about time the unemployed stopped being subsidized in their idleness – cutting off benefits, so the argument goes, will make them try harder to find a job.
