Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Tuition,Fees To Remain Unchanged At UMass For Second Straight Year

The cost of attending the University of Massachusetts for the 2014-15 academic year will not increase for the majority of undergraduates.  The state’s taxpayers will be putting more toward the cost of a UMass education.

   The University of Massachusetts board of trustees voted to freeze tuition and mandatory fees for in-state undergraduate students for the second year in a row.  The back-to-back freeze is a first in recent UMass history.

Comcast-TWC Merger Update

Most Americans are opposed to the proposed merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable, according to a new public opinion poll by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. The odds of a merger happening may be tipping toward the cable companies. 

There are opinions, and then there is action – or lack of interest. The poll showed just 11 percent of the public supports the $45.2 billion merger, 56 percent oppose it, and 32 percent had no opinion. The Public Service Commission has been holding hearings on the merger in New York this week.

New York To Allow Limited Medical Marijuana Under Agreement

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the legislature have agreed to a limited medical marijuana program for patients with cancer, AIDS, and childhood seizure disorders. It will not allow the drug to be smoked.
