The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Michael Meeropol: Paying Unemployment Insurance Is Not Just A Moral Issue

As I speak, approximately 1.3 million of the long-term unemployed have exhausted their benefits --- they now receive nothing to bolster their spending. To some, this is an outrageous betrayal of the fundamental decency that is at the core of the best of America’s moral traditions. To others, it is about time the unemployed stopped being subsidized in their idleness – cutting off benefits, so the argument goes, will make them try harder to find a job.

Moreau Steps Into Saratoga County Casino Debate

The debate over casino development in Saratoga County is expanding, as the town of Moreau is making its own pitch for a possible casino location.

The town of Moreau is pitching the idea to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office to establish a casino on Mt. McGregor, home to a New York State prison slated for closure in July.

Earlier this week, Moreau’s town board approved a measure in support of casino development on the 1,200-acre facility.

Rails To Trails Project Proposed in Adirondacks

A group in the Adirondacks is advocating for what it says could be a prime recreational and economic opportunity for the region.  Adirondack Recreational Trail Advocates wants to convert rail tracks in the central Adirondacks into a recreational trail. But it faces opposition from the rail company that wants to restore the tracks.
