Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Today is a nationwide “Day of Action” around issues plaguing public education. Teachers, parents, union leaders and even some school superintendents and board members in New York are clothed in blue to show their concern for what they see as an overemphasis on testing, an under-emphasis on state education funding, and inequitable spending between districts.

Albany Law Dean, South African Native Remembers Nelson Mandela

Albany Law School Dean Penny Andrews grew up in apartheid South Africa. Years later, Nelson Mandela wrote the foreword to her book The Post-Apartheid Constitutions: Perspectives on South Africa's Basic Law. In 2005, Dean Andrews was a finalist for a vacancy on the Constitutional Court of South Africa, the highest court on the country’s constitutional matters.

Holiday Lights, Music Mark Muncipal Group's 100 Years

A complex of municipal buildings in Springfield, Massachusetts is 100 years old.  Anniversary festivities are taking place this weekend

A holiday lighting ceremony, concerts, tours and displays of old photographs and memorabilia will mark the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the civic landmarks collectively known as the Municipal Group. It consists of two Greek Revival-style buildings made of limestone and marble that house Springfield City Hall and Symphony Hall.  Between the two is a 300-foot Italian Campanile clock tower.

A New York state senator from the Hudson Valley is introducing legislation to bring unfunded mandate relief to counties.

Democratic state Senator Terry Gipson is sponsoring two bills he says will help bring mandate relief during this era of a 2-percent-mandated property tax cap.

Community Meeting: Defending The Poor

Capital Region Bureau Chief Dave Lucas attended an Albany screening of the HBO Documentary Gideon's Army and a panel discussion that followed.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Gideon v. Wainwright in which the Supreme Court ruled, unanimously, that defendants in criminal cases deserved legal representation in state courts. If defendants could not afford counsel, the state would have to provide it. Those lawyers are known as public defenders.
