Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Schumer Pledges To Help Schenectady Battle Blight

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer visited Schenectady tuesday to give the city a helping hand and make some much-needed housing improvements.

The backdrop to Schumer's appearance along the electric city's Broadway in the Bellvue section: a blighted building damaged by fire four years ago. Its absentee landlord has left the property fallow for years.

UMass To Open Satellite Campus In Springfield

The University of Massachusetts plans to open its first-ever satellite campus next fall in downtown Springfield.  University and city officials believe the venture will be mutually beneficial.

The UMass satellite campus will be situated in the 30-story Tower Square office building on Main Street in downtown Springfield.  Officials say the expanded presence of the state’s land grant university in the largest city in western Massachusetts will afford students more degree opportunities while infusing downtown Springfield with vitality.

Senator Schumer Calls For Review Of Indian Point Riverfront Security

New York U.S. Senator Charles Schumer Monday stood alongside the Hudson River waterfront in Peekskill, calling for the Department of Homeland Security to review riverfront security at the Indian Point nuclear power plant.

New York’s senior senator urged the U.S. Coast Guard, which is under the jurisdiction of the Homeland Security Department, to quarterback the effort to provide a maritime security plan for Westchester County-based Indian Point.

He says federal, state, and local resources in the form of boat patrols are available.

First Bike Lanes Designated In Springfield

Although bike lanes are a common sight on many urban streets, the third- largest city in Massachusetts only recently opened its first designated lanes for bicycles.  But plans are in the works to make Springfield a more bicycle and pedestrian friendly city

   About a dozen bicyclists braved the below freezing weather Monday afternoon to peddle along the newly marked bike lanes on Springfield’s Plumtree Road with encouragement from Mayor Domenic Sarno. The mayor joined city residents, bicycling advocates and urban planners to celebrate the completion of the bike lane project.
