The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Senator Schumer Calls For Review Of Indian Point Riverfront Security

New York U.S. Senator Charles Schumer Monday stood alongside the Hudson River waterfront in Peekskill, calling for the Department of Homeland Security to review riverfront security at the Indian Point nuclear power plant.

New York’s senior senator urged the U.S. Coast Guard, which is under the jurisdiction of the Homeland Security Department, to quarterback the effort to provide a maritime security plan for Westchester County-based Indian Point.

He says federal, state, and local resources in the form of boat patrols are available.

First Bike Lanes Designated In Springfield

Although bike lanes are a common sight on many urban streets, the third- largest city in Massachusetts only recently opened its first designated lanes for bicycles.  But plans are in the works to make Springfield a more bicycle and pedestrian friendly city

   About a dozen bicyclists braved the below freezing weather Monday afternoon to peddle along the newly marked bike lanes on Springfield’s Plumtree Road with encouragement from Mayor Domenic Sarno. The mayor joined city residents, bicycling advocates and urban planners to celebrate the completion of the bike lane project.

John F. Kennedy Remembered At Eternal Flame Ceremony

The life of the 35th President of the United States was remembered in Springfield, Massachusetts this afternoon.  Hundreds of people turned out for a commemoration at the only eternal flame dedicated to John F. Kennedy other than at his gravesite.

It was a solemn tribute on a cloudy damp day in Springfield’s Forest Park, where the eternal flame memorial to John F. Kennedy was established just one year after his assassination.  There was a moment of silence. Three red roses were placed at the base of the memorial stone. A wreath was placed at the foot of the eternal flame.
