The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Officials Praise Regional Housing Plan

At a meeting today in Chicopee ,top federal and state housing officials praised a newly released plan for expanding access to housing in a large area of western Massachusetts.

The report by the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission is the first effort to create a regional housing plan that covers 43 diverse western Massachusetts communities including impoverished urban centers, well-off suburbs, and rural sparsely populated towns.

Keith Strudler: The Brave March To Suburbia

I went to the Summer Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta, as well as the track and field Olympic trials in the same venue. I watched Michael Johnson run, which at that point I assumed was the fastest man there ever could be, and I spent the better part of a week surviving the summer heat of Hotlanta. And I remember thinking, as a track and field fan, that wow, that’s one nice track stadium in the middle of a big city.

Vermont Attorney General Discusses Settlement of Cramming Case

The state of Vermont has settled two “cramming” lawsuits that will refund more than $900,000 to 12,500 Vermont consumers.  Vermont’s Attorney General talks about the settlement and a multi-state effort to curb the third-party billing practice.

NYS DEC And Global Companies Host Oil Spill Drill In The Mid-Hudson

Local, state and federal officials held an oil spill exercise along the Hudson River in Orange County today, prompted by the increase in oil transport along New York’s rail lines and waterways prompted the drill.

The fictional drill involved a midnight spill of 50,000 gallons of heating oil from Global Companies’ five-million gallon storage tank in New Windsor into the Hudson River.

In the scenario, the spill derailed a CSX train.

Divided Town Awaits Casino Vote Recount

The town clerk in Palmer, Massachusetts is expected to announce this week the date for a recount of the votes cast in the November 5th referendum on Mohegan Sun’s $1 billion casino proposal.  The Connecticut-based casino operator late last week filed the necessary paperwork to obtain a recount of the referendum it lost by fewer than 100 votes.
