Karen Hitchcock: Public Higher Education - Disinvestment Puts Quality At Risk

Late one evening not long ago, I had left the TV tuned to the David Letterman show while I finished up some writing.  As the former president of two different public universities – one in the United States and one in Canada – imagine my shock when I heard the following: “I’m dumb, I went to a state college.” Let me repeat that:  “I’m dumb,” said Mr. Letterman, “ I went to a state college.”

Republicans say their party’s county executive wins in the Hudson Valley and elsewhere in New York State bode well for the 2014 governor’s race.

The New York Republican State Committee’s executive director Michael Lawler was celebrating in Westchester County Tuesday night with supporters of incumbent Republican County Executive Rob Astorino, who won re-election to a second term in a county where Democrats outnumber Republicans by about 2-to-1. Here’s Lawler.

All of the six Plattsburgh city council seats were up for election this year. As the campaigns drew close to election day, Republican candidates in two wards, and in some county legislative races, raised concerns over an unusual increase in filings for absentee ballots. Keith Strudler: Hazing, Incognito And The NFL

When I say the word hazing, you probably think about college, maybe a frat house where pledges are forced to dress up or clean the house or things far more onerous and potentially dangerous. In fact, hazing has gone from something of a tradition to a dirty word, something that keeps college presidents up all night. Once a right of passage, now it’s something of a criminal offense.

Stephen Gottlieb: Casinos And The Board Of Elections

When this is aired, I will be in Washington, D. C., where my students and I went to the U.S. Supreme Court to hear cases argued that we have been studying. Since it is also election day, I had to fill out an absentee ballot. On the ballot, the casino proposition leads the group of ballot propositions. Governor Cuomo had “submitted a concurrent resolution to the State Legislature to amend article I, § 9 of the State Constitution to allow for ‘casino gambling regulated by the state.’”(1)
