Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Karen Hitchcock: Universities as Economic Drivers - The Need For Cross-Sector Collaboration

 As part of the celebrations surrounding the recent inauguration of Dr. Robert J. Jones as the 19th President of the University at Albany, a program was presented on the topic: “Universities and Colleges as Economic Drivers.” Universities and colleges have long been acknowledged as institutions which add to the economy of their regions, particularly in terms of their ongoing recruitment of new people to the area (faculty, staff and students), with a resulting boost to the local economy – restaurants, entertainment venues, retail, real estate, and on and on.  While important, this kind of economic impact is passive, deriving from the very nature of the higher education enterprise. However, universities can and, in my mind should, play a much more active and purposeful role in advancing the economic vitality of their communities.

Natalie Merchant Joins NYS To Combat Domestic Violence

Recording artist Natalie Merchant appeared with anti-domestic violence advocates at WAMC’s Performing Arts Center The Linda Wednesday to promote a new public service announcement and video series on domestic violence awareness.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Hotlines across New York State received more than 25-thousand calls in 2012. New York is kicking off a public education campaign entitled  “Don’t Do Nothing,”  to encourage those who “see something” to “say something.”
