The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Cuomo's Moreland Act Commission To Probe Legislature

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has joined forces with the state’s attorney general to create a commission with wide ranging powers to investigate corruption in the state legislature.

Following a legislative session where now nearly three dozen state lawmakers have been indicted, arrested, or jailed, Governor Cuomo named a panel to investigate the legislature.

Security Beefed Up For Independence Day Celebrations

As people celebrate America’s independence at community concerts and fireworks shows this week there is a focus on security at large public gatherings. Police are mindful of April’s Boston Marathon bombing.

       Massachusetts authorities consulted with security experts and studied practices used by police in New York City and London to devise a security plan for July 4th.  Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney encourages people to attend the annual concert and fireworks show at the city’s Riverfront Park. He said there is nothing that suggests any threat to the event.

#AlbEco Forum: Albany Mayoral Candidates Discuss Issues

The New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund and WAMC Northeast Public Radio held the 2013 Albany Mayoral Forum on Sustainability this morning at the Linda Norris Auditorium on Central Avenue, one of the only times the candidates to replace Mayor Jerry Jennings will gather during the campaign.
 
Five of the six declared candidates fielded questions from WAMC President and CEO Alan Chartock and Marcia Bystryn, president of the New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund.

NY Congressman Says Aid Is Available For Those Impacted By Three Storms

Amid flash flood warnings and actual flooding in portions of the Hudson Valley and Capital Region, a New York Congressman is trying to get the word out that there is still federal aid available to help homeowners and small businesses impacted by three previous storms.

The most pressing deadline is July 5, for communities to apply for hazard mitigation funds. Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney explains.

Blair Horner: NY Takes Step Toward Reducing Cigarette Smuggling

Higher prices have been shown to encourage smokers to quit or reduce their consumption of cigarettes.  Cigarette tax evasion makes cigarettes cheaper and reduces the public health benefits of New York’s excise tax, as well as depriving the state of much-needed revenue.  Were the tax collected on all cigarettes smoked in New York, tens of thousands of adults would quit rather than pay higher prices, and state revenues would dramatically increase.
