Aging and Independent Living

The notion that the elderly should be able to live out their lives in their own homes rather than be forced into assisted-living facilities is part of a growing movement called Aging in Place. In the studio today are two driving forces of that movement in the Hudson Valley, Karl DeKeukelaere of Hudson Valley Home Matters and Nina Lynch of Rhinebeck at Home.

Vermont has made big progress in clearing up a backlog of investigations by the division of state government that investigates reports of abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of the elderly and other vulnerable adults.

But there's concern that the Adult Protective Services division of the Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living may be clearing the backlog in part by being too selective in taking new cases.
