Berkshire Grown Harvest Supper

    Summer is wrapping up, and the season is inching toward fall and harvest time. Which means - it is also time for the annual benefit for Berkshire Grown on Monday September 16th at 6:30 pm at Ski Butternut in Great Barrington, MA.

The Berkshire Grown Harvest Supper features delicious dishes prepared by local Berkshire Grown member chefs using fresh ingredients from local farms. The evening also includes a silent auction and a drawing for shopping sprees and gift certificates to Berkshire Grown member stores and restaurants.

"The American Way of Eating" by Tracie McMillan

  When journalist Tracie McMillan saw foodies swooning over $9 organic tomatoes, she couldn’t help but wonder: What about the rest of us? Why do working Americans eat the way we do? And what can we do to change it? To find out, McMillan went undercover in three jobs that feed America, living and eating off her wages in each.

Susan Werner: Writing Music Where She Was Planted

    "Susan Werner [is] a clever songwriter and an engaging performer, [she] brings literacy and wit back to popular song." according to The New Yorker and the Chicago Tribune called her "One of the most innovative songwriters working today."

Her recent album, Hayseed, is a tribute to American agriculture and to her Iowa farm roots.

She will be performing this Thursday night at Joe’s Pub in New York City and then will play on Friday and Saturday at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in Hillsdale, NY.

Gov. Patrick Announces Grants To Local Farms

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick visited a third generation family farm in western Massachusetts  to announce a new round of grants to help sustain farm operations across the commonwealth.

   Governor Patrick announced grants totaling $700,000 to 11 different farms including vegetable farms, livestock operations, a cranberry farm and a goat dairy.  The grants, ranging from $25,000 to $100,000, will be used for infrastructure improvements such as new greenhouses and barns or to purchase energy- efficient equipment.

Federal agricultural officials to survey NY maple production

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Federal agriculture researchers will again be doing a census of New York maple syrup production in April and May.    

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the state ranked second to Vermont in last year's survey of producers in 10 states. Inspectors will collect information about the number of taps, yield, prices and the overall value of the maple products from New York. The results will be released in June. Copyright 2013 The Associated Press.
