Alan Alda

Alan Alda At Proctors

Nov 7, 2017

Alan Alda is an actor, director, screenwriter, author and seven-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winner. He is widely known for playing Captain Hawkeye Pierce in the TV series "M*A*S*H," hosting "Scientific American Frontiers," and playing Arnold Vinick on "The West Wing."

A lifelong lover of science, Alda would like everyday people and science to shake hands. Just as he knew to get to a doctor, because of what his body was telling him, Alda believes that people should have an easier time understanding and relating to science. So aside from hosting PBS specials for over two decades, Alda has helped found the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, where scientists learn the communicative skills to help the world understand science better without all the jargon.

Alan Alda will be at Proctors in Schenectady, NY on Thursday, November 9 presenting a program entitled "Getting Beyond A Blind Date with Science."

And another one bites the dust. Before we kick 2015 to the curb for good, let’s listen back to conversations with some really interesting people we had this year. Today on the Best Of Our Knowledge, we’ll listen again to Pat Bradley’s interview with Alan Alda when he came to Vermont to open an institute for scientific communication.

Whenever you saw Alan Alda on the big screen or the small, he usually played a practical, well-spoken character who knows how to communicate to the audience.

Now he is working to make sure that scientists around the worlds have those safe communication skills when getting their ideas across to the public. Today on the Best Of Our Knowledge we’ll hear about the Alda Center for Scientific Communication…and find out where they are setting up shop.

Actor, director and author Alan Alda is best known for his many roles on stage and screen, but the man who played Hawkeye Pierce on M*A*S*H is leaving his mark on science as well. The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University teaches scientists how to better communicate what they are doing.  Alda inspired the institute and is a visiting professor. Now, the center is expanding and has affiliated centers at Dartmouth University and the University of Vermont. Alda spoke with WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley as the program was initiated at the University of Vermont this week. He says while it helps scientists communicate with the public, it is equally important for the public to understand scientists.

Actor Alan Alda may be best known for his role as Hawkeye Pierce on the TV series M*A*S*H or as Senator Arnold Vinick on The West Wing.  But his current work is focused on helping train scientists to more effectively communicate with the public. He was on the University of Vermont campus Monday to help launch a new institute to further that goal.
