An inmate who smuggled weapons into the Albany County Jail was apparently trying to organize a "jailhouse gang."

Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple’s son, Kyle Apple, was arrested for drunken driving early Saturday morning after a crash at Central and Colvin Avenues. The Times Union reports Kyle was found inside his disabled car with keys still in the ignition and engine running. The 21-year-old allegedly was found with an open can of beer, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.


Authorities across the nation are warning about the dangers of a cellphone case that's shaped like a handgun, saying it could be mistaken for the real thing. The concern is heightened among elected officials and police agencies across New York State.

A daylong summit on crude oil transportation is under way at the College of St. Rose in Albany.

Albany County hasn't had a major oil train disaster, but County Executive Dan McCoy, erring on the side of "safe, not sorry" called a community "Crude Oil Transportation Summit" to brainstorm and compare notes with officials who have had to deal with such calamities.  "We've never really had to deal with this type of emergency, and hopefully we never do. But we want to be prepared, if something, God forbid like this happens, that we handle it correctly."

  The U.S. Attorney's office says more than $9.6 million in assets seized in an international internet gambling takedown is being distributed to law enforcement agencies in New York and Florida as well as the federal government.

A potential flooding disaster averted, Albany city and county officials continue to monitor the situation where the Normans Kill creek flows between two golf courses.

Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple kicked off their re-election campaigns Sunday. Top Democrats are closing ranks behind the two candidates early in the election season.

  Albany County has cracked a prostitution ring.   Sheriff Craig Apple says ten people – one man and nine women ranging in age from 24-55 – are facing charges of Prostitution as part of a human trafficking case following raids on several unlicensed Asian massage parlors in the town of Colonie.  The arrests were initiated with the intent to help identify victims being exploited as sex workers. Apple plans to offer counseling to help the women, most of whom were from Flushing, NewYork.

The long lines of DOT 111 oil tankers parked outside of the Ezra Prentice complex in Albany are a constant reminder to some residents they are living in the shadow of potential disaster. Critics of crude oil transportation by rail are in pro-active mode when it comes to disaster preparedness.

Add one more voice of support for an Albany Casino -  The Exit 23 or E23 as it's called casino proposal got a strong endorsement from Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple - the Sheriff dashed a letter off to the developer and Capital OTB expressing his "unequivocal support for Project E23' - which sits on land owned by US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's family, its strategic location isolating it from Albany neighborhoods.

As we draw nearer to the end of 2013, law enforcement authorities are stepping up their efforts to prevent drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel.  Consumption of alcoholic beverages is part of holiday celebrations. The same can be said for public awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. 

The New York State Thruway Authority and Mothers Against Drunk Driving have kicked off their annual "red ribbon" campaign against drunken driving. 65,000 red ribbons are being handed out to motorists along the Thruway. 

NY, Fla. suspects in federal online gambling probe

Nine people including two upstate New York jail guards are being charged after an investigation of online gambling and money laundering.

A U.S. Attorney says three men and a woman from Florida have been charged along with five men from the Albany area. Two of the Florida suspects are charged with money laundering, and two with transmission of wagering information. The New Yorkers are charged with enterprise corruption.
