In baseball, the Boston Red Sox stretched their lead in the American League East. Clay Buchholz scattered three hits in five innings of Boston's 2-0 shutout of Tampa Bay. Jonny Gomes and Jarrod Saltalamacchia both drove in a run for the Red Sox, who extended their lead over second-place Tampa Bay to 8 1/2 games in the East.

The outcome keeps the Rays' lead for the second AL wild-card berth at 1 ½ games over Baltimore and Cleveland, with the Yankees just two games back.

In baseball, the Yankees put together a five-run eighth to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. Alfonso Soriano sparked the comeback with a two-run single and Curtis Granderson singled home the tying run before Eduardo Nunez lined a two-run double.

In baseball, the Red Sox beat San Francisco 12-1 yesterday. Stephen Drew and Will Middlebrooks each hit a home run. Jonny Gomes and Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in two runs apiece. The Red Sox have won three of five and entered play in a virtual first-place tie with Tampa Bay in the AL East. The Red Sox will have a day off today before playing the Dodgers in Los Angeles tomorrow.

Brady Sprains Knee, Giving New England A Scare

In the NFL, the New England Patriots got a scare Wednesday when quarterback Tom Brady limped off the practice field. Brady sprained his left knee after he was hit after throwing a pass. His return is day to day.

In baseball news, the New York Yankees pounded the L.A. Angels 11-3. Alfonso Soriano homered twice for the second straight night and drove in a career-high seven runs. That gives him a staggering 13 RBIs in two games.

Yankees To Discipline A-Rod For 2nd Medical Opinion

In baseball news, already a target of Major League Baseball's drug investigation, third baseman Alex Rodriguez angered the Yankees when he obtained a second medical opinion on his strained left quadriceps this week. The Yankees intend to discipline him, most likely with a fine.
