NY rewards 4 districts for efficiency savings

On Tuesday Gov. Andrew Cuomo held the districts up as models for the rest of the state, while promising them $12 million in competitive grants over the next three years.

Rochester is the biggest winner, receiving $4.5 million for identifying $9.5 million in savings. Newburgh and Kenmore-Tonawanda will each get $3.6 million for finding nearly $6 million in savings and Queensbury is being awarded $561,000 for finding $624,000 in savings.

Group warns NY drilling delays have economic costs

An oil and gas industry group is warning that a business exodus from New York will worsen while Gov. Andrew Cuomo waits for a Pennsylvania health study before deciding whether to allow fracking.

Meanwhile, landowners are preparing to sue the state over lost gas-leasing opportunities.

The Associated Press reported Saturday that Cuomo came close to approving a limited drilling plan last month before environmentalist and former brother-in-law Robert Kennedy Jr. persuaded him to await a new study.

Cuomo sees federal budget impact on New Yorkers

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the federal budget fight forcing temporary across-the-board spending cuts will affect New Yorkers including students and seniors.

He says the cuts won't have as big an impact on state government.

The dispute between Democratic President Barack Obama and the Republican-led House over spending cuts and tax increases led to automatic cuts that started Friday.

Cuomo says brinksmanship isn't the way to do business and makes people anxious.

Governor wants to require gas stations to install backup generators to pump gas

ALBANY – Governor Andrew Cuomo proposes that gas stations be required to install backup generators to power their gas pumps in the event of a power outage triggered by natural disaster like Superstorm Sandy.

The plan, announced on Wednesday, would require that all gas stations within a half-mile of highway exists and evacuation routes have a transfer switch installed and to deploy and install a generator within 24 hours of losing power during a fuel supply or energy emergency.

NY Gun Owners Can Opt Out of FOIL Requests

Gun owners were shocked when a Westchester County-based newspaper uploaded an interactive map that displayed the names and home addresses of pistol owners in Westchester and Rockland counties. Beginning today, New Yorkers can "opt out" of the public record and not have to worry about their private information being shared.

NY Dem co-chair urges rejection of Cuomo budget

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The co-chairwoman of the state Democratic Party says Gov. Andrew Cuomo's proposed budget should be rejected because it doesn't include measures to save upstate cities from insolvency.

Stephanie Miner, who's also the mayor of Syracuse, says Cuomo needs to show leadership by holding a meeting with legislators and local government officials to find ways to ease the burden on local taxpayers. Miner's strongest criticism yet came in an opinion piece in Thursday's New York Times.

Hundreds call for state to reverse new gun laws

ALBANY – Over 500 people rallied in front of the Governor’s Mansion in Albany on Tuesday calling for the state to reverse its recently adopted state law imposing strict regulations on gun owners.

Hudson Valley Assemblyman Steven Katz (R-14) had an impassioned plea.

“Governor Cuomo, tear up this law,” Katz told the Second Amendment rally in West Capitol Park. Katz’s call was a clear reference to the late President Reagan’s famous demand in 1987 to then Soviet President Gorbachev concerning the Berlin Wall: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”
