Educators Respond to Budget Proposal

Education and Medicaid comprise 50-percent of the state budget.  Governor Cuomo’s proposed education budget will continue several of the funding programs that were enacted in the last budget appropriation.

NYS School Boards Association Executive Director Timothy Kremer says he is favorably impressed with the Governor’s plan.

There is talk in Albany about a  plan that would provide financial aid and other assistance to college-bound illegal immigrants.

The idea is to provide a way to help poor immigrant families afford college.  Similar proposals in New York and the nation have faced strong opposition from conservatives. 

On this edition of Vox Pop we are talking about the DREAM Act. What is your opinion of the idea?  Should we provide this type of assistance to those in this country illegally?

Gov. Cuomo set to outline $132 billion NYS budget

Governor Andrew Cuomo is set to detail his budget proposals for the state's 2013-2014 fiscal year beginning April 1. He's expected to propose about $132 billion in spending and attack a deficit of at least $1 billion.

When Governor Cuomo takes the wraps off his budget for 2013, he'll explain how programs he announced earlier this month in his State of the State message will be funded. Cuomo is NOT expected to propose a tax hike to pay for the initiatives and to close the budget deficit. The Governor has promised that his budget address will be notable for its lack of surprises.

DREAM Act would provide aid to illegal immigrants

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Support is building in New York for a "DREAM Act" that would provide financial aid and other assistance to college-bound illegal immigrants in the state.

The proposal is being pushed by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.

Now, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Republicans who share control of the state Senate are interested in discussing the bill.

NRA: NY's quick gun law passage nixed opposition

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The National Rifle Association says the secret negotiations and lightning-fast passage of New York's tough new gun control laws squelched the powerful gun lobby's ability to mount opposition.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he had to engineer quick enactment to prevent a counterproductive buying spree of now-outlawed guns.

The legislation was introduced and signed into law in less than two days.

Critics Say Cuomo Rushed Action on Guns

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is being criticized by a good-government group and rank-and-file lawmakers for rushing his gun control law through secret meetings to make New York the first state to enact a measure since the Newtown, Conn., tragedy.

Dick Dadey of Citizens Union says the closed-door negotiations followed by immediate votes were unnecessary for a bill in which most measures aren't effective for 60 days.

Dadey says public input and debate makes better laws.

NY Assembly Takes Up Gun Legislation

  ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Legislation that would give New York state the toughest gun restrictions in the nation is expected to easily pass today in the state Assembly, where is it being debated this morning.

It's already won approval in the state Senate, where the Republican leader says it is "well-balanced" and "protects the Second Amendment."

It provides for a stricter assault ban, and seeks to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. It also calls for restrictions on ammunition and the sale of guns.

New York's Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy joined other elected officials and Women’s health supporters at the Capitol to boost Governor  Cuomo’s call for passage of a Women’s Equality Act.

Family Planning Advocates of NYS President and CEO Tracey Brooks was upbeat as she greeted some 400 supporters at  FPA's signature advocacy event for the start of the 2013 legislative session.  Women in pink scarves, and men wearing pink ties, felt particularly empowered by the Governor's strong pro-gender-equality message delivered within his State of the State address -

Cuomo Proposes NY Paddling Competition

Governor Andrew Cuomo says the state will sponsor a national rafting and paddling competition called the Adirondack Challenge this year.

In his State of the State speech Wednesday, Cuomo said the new event will bring international attention to the beauty and recreational opportunities of the Adirondacks and attract more tourism.
