A new University at Albany-led study finds that while local regulation helps reduce tobacco availability, there is increased concern about the rise of electronic cigarettes.

Another upstate New York locality is considering banning the sale of tobacco products to people under the age of 21.


A legislative task force is expected to decide whether to recommend that Connecticut lawmakers vote to ban smoking in vehicles when a child is inside.

Seventeen years after the 1998 Tobacco Settlement, a new report says many states are not spending their shares of the money on programs to stop smoking and to help people quit the habit. Chris Hansen, the president of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, says even though the northeast often leads the nation in many areas of no-smoking efforts, the states fall short in using the settlement money. He spoke recently with WAMC’s Brian Shields.

Albany County Executive Dan McCoy has vetoed a proposed law that would have prohibited the sale of tobacco products in licensed health care institutions, pharmacies and retail establishments containing a pharmacy in Albany County -  this isn't the end of the line for local anti-tobacco legislation.

Today is the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout, an effort begun by anti-cancer groups nearly four decades ago to help people quit smoking. This year the Cancer Society in New York is using the day to call attention to a decline in state spending on anti-smoking programs.

Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, in partnership with Albany Law School, have implemented a 100% tobacco-free campus policy, now in place. A Tobacco-Free Kickoff Event was held tuesday in front of the ACPHS Student Center. Officials hail the move as a "notable step" toward a healthier and cleaner environment.

Leading state and national healthcare advocates gathered today with public officials and others at the Gateway Diner on Albany's Central Avenue to mark the 10th Anniversary of the New York State Clean Indoor Air Act.

New York's 2003 Clean Indoor Air Act banned smoking in almost all workplaces, including bars, restaurants, bowling facilities, taverns and bingo halls.  In the past 10 years, the Act has protected millions of citizens from daily exposure to deadly secondhand smoke and the illnesses it causes.

A number of cancer organization and anti-smoking groups has penned a letter to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, asking him to bolster what they say are lifesaving programs, and not cut them.  And, the groups contend, for the first time, the programs appear differently in the governor’s proposed budget.
