Baystate Medical Center


A hospital merger was celebrated today in western Massachusetts. The deal promises to maintain local access to healthcare and preserve hundreds of jobs. 

Dozens of community leaders, elected officials, and healthcare workers gathered under a large white tent on the lawn of a landmark hospital in Westfield to applaud the debut of Baystate Noble Hospital.


The University of Massachusetts is forging stronger ties with Springfield.  A new partnership in education based in Springfield is aimed at improving health care in urban and rural areas of western Massachusetts.

The University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester will open a campus in 2017 at Baystate Health’s flagship medical center in Springfield.  This will be the first regional campus for the state’s only public medical school. By placing it in western Massachusetts, officials hope to begin to address a severe shortage of physicians in the region.

Trooper Shoots Man To death At Traffic Stop

A 23-year-old Springfield man has been killed and a 22-year-old woman wounded in an altercation with a Massachusetts state trooper during a routine traffic stop.

State police say the trooper stopped the pair at about 12:20 a.m. on Interstate 91 in Chicopee.

Police say at some point the male driver became combative, and began struggling with the officer, who then fired shots into the vehicle.


A bill filed in the Massachusetts legislature is aimed at preventing a leading cause of injury to children, falls from windows.   The bill was endorsed by child safety advocates at a news conference in Springfield on Tuesday. 

A new survey of medical specialists by researchers in Springfield Massachusetts found many could not accommodate patients who use a wheelchair.   The 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act  mandates that all medical practitioners must provide full and equal access. 


A new $45 million dollar emergency and trauma center opened at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield this morning.  The state of the art facility will treat critically injured and ill people from throughout western Massachusetts.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill reports.

The new emergency department at Baystate Medical Center’s main campus in Springfield’s North End was opened to receive patients beginning at 7:30  Monday morning. The new facility is 72,000 square feet, 55,000 square feet larger than the old emergency room.
