Although a strike was averted, the Massachusetts Nurses Association held a candlelight vigil in front of Berkshire Medical Center Monday night. Contract negotiations with the Pittsfield hospital have dragged on for a year and a half.

Registered nurses at Berkshire Medical Center say they will launch a second strike after demands for contract changes were not met. The nurses say they want improved staffing to ensure patient safety. Hundreds of nurses planned to go to back to work at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts at 7 this morning after a 24-hour strike. But hospital management locked them out.

More than 200 nurses walked out of Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts this morning and onto the picket line. It follows a year of failed contract negotiations.

Berkshire Medical Center nurses intend to start a 24-hour unfair labor practice strike at 7 a.m. Tuesday.  It follows a year of failed contract negotiations, and replacement nurses are being trained.

A hearing has been under way since 11 this morning between the Massachusetts Nurses Association and Berkshire Medical Center in U.S. District Court in Springfield as the hospital tries to halt a planned strike next week with a federal injunction. The two groups have been at an impasse over a new contract for a year. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief JD Allen spoke with Berkshire Health Systems Vice President and General Counsel John Rogers about the union’s plans to hold a 24-hour unfair labor practice strike beginning October 3rd.

Update at 1:15 Thursday: The Massachusetts Nurses Association has canceled Thursday's rally due to the winter storm in Pittsfield.

Despite the winter storm, nurses at Berkshire Medical Center are planning a rally in Pittsfield today over what they say are unsafe staffing levels at the hospital. WAMC spoke with Amber VanBramer, a registered nurse at BMC who is a member of the bargaining committee for the Massachusetts Nurses Association at the hospital. The union represents all of the roughly 800 registered nurses at Berkshire Medical Center.
