Massachusetts U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren was in western Massachusetts today where she offered words of encouragement to teenage girls taking part in a summer science and technology education program and attended a swearing in ceremony for a new federal judge.

   Briefly addressing about 50 teenage girls who are participating in a collaborative program of Holyoke Girls Inc. and UMass Amherst, the state’s senior U.S. Senator pointed to herself as an example of what the girls can achieve with the right amount of support and encouragement.

Science, technology, engineering and math are the focus of a career fair in Pittsfield today.

Roughly 400 high school students had the chance to speak to representatives from more than 30 companies, colleges and governmental agencies highlighting careers in the STEM fields. Judith Monachina works in career services at Berkshire Community College, which hosted the fair.

With college students across the country back on campus, those at a western Massachusetts school are heading into brand new classrooms.

Pittsfield’s upcoming 3rd Thursday will showcase the best of Berkshire County’s science and technology initiatives.

“There’s going to be robots, rockets, rocket launchers, an air cannon, and one of my personal favorites, the Mentos and soda-pop experiment," said the city’s Cultural Development Director Megan Whilden.
