               The Eastern States Exposition, known as the Big E, opened its gates to the public in West Springfield today as the annual fair observes its 100th anniversary.

It's state fair time, and the largest agricultural fair in the Northeast, The Big E, is marking its centennial this year.

The 100th edition opens September 16th at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund

    A traveling educational exhibit about the Vietnam War that includes a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington, D.C. is making stops in the region this summer.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund

A replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial will be displayed in western Massachusetts this summer as part of a national tour. 

Thousands of people are expected to visit the exhibit which will be at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield. 

A local planning committee has started working on the details.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Chris Lizotte, director of the West Springfield Department of Veterans Services.

The 5th largest fair in North America opens its gates to the public this Friday morning in western Massachusetts.  The Eastern States Exposition, the Big E, is counting down to its centennial year in 2016.  The Big E has experienced record-setting attendance during its 17-day annual run since Gene Cassidy became president of the Eastern States Exposition in 2012.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Cassidy at the fairgrounds in West Springfield.

The largest agricultural fair in the Northeast opens today in western Massachusetts.  The Eastern States Exposition – the Big E -- is steeped in tradition, but fair operators are looking to the future.  

How big a deal is the Big E?  Attendance records were set in each of the two previous years. 1.5 million people passed through the gates of the fairgrounds in West Springfield last year and that established the Big E as the fifth largest fair in North America, according to Big E President Eugene Cassidy.
