Vermont Workers Center Leading Low-Wage Protests

Shoppers heading out for Black Friday at two of Vermont's Wal-Mart stores are likely to run into protesters trying to raise awareness about low wages for workers at the retail giant's outlets.

The Vermont Workers Center is organizing events it says are tied to similar protests around the country.

Actions are planned for the Wal-Mart store in Williston from 10 a.m. to noon and at the Berlin Wal-Mart from noon to 2 p.m.

Similar protests are planned for McDonald's restaurants in South Burlington and Berlin next Thursday.

Blumenthal: Beware Black Friday 'Tricks And Traps'

Connecticut U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal is warning of the "tricks and traps" some advertisers use to try to lure consumers into making purchases on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The Connecticut Democrat has scheduled a Friday morning news conference at his Hartford office to highlight what he calls laughable, ludicrous and deceptive ads that consumers should be on the lookout for as the holiday shopping season begins.

Northern New England Occupy Groups Join Walmart Protests

Occupy protesters in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont joined others across the nation in Black Friday pickets at Walmart stores.

In New Hampshire, groups demonstrated in Somersworth, Manchester, Derry, Salem and other locations to take issue with wages, benefits and treatment of employees of the world's largest retailer.

In Ellsworth, one of the Maine communities where protesters appeared, about 15 activists near the city's Walmart Supercenter held signs with slogans such as "Support the strike!" and "Boycott Black Friday!"

Industry Forecasters Predict Stronger Holiday Shopping Season in Mass.

Despite worry and economic uncertainty, industry forecasters are predicting stronger retail sales this holiday season. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief took a look what small businesses in Western Massachusetts are predicting in the coming weeks.

The holiday shopping season is upon us. Next weekend is the busiest shopping day of the year. But also, economic uncertainty and the looming fiscal cliff are on the minds of many. However, retail industry forecasters are still predicting a stronger holidays sales season this November and December.
