Sports Report: British Open Is Underway, All Eyes On Tiger

Golf – The British Open:

The 143rd British Open is underway at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England.

This is the third major of the year. Bubba Watson won the Masters back in April before Martin Kaymer won the U.S. Open last month. Each will be after his second major title of the year.

Tiger Woods and defending champ Phil Mickelson are among the other big names looking to contend this year.

Napoli's 11th Inning Homer Help Sox Take Yankees 8-7

In baseball news, Mike Napoli homered with two outs in the 11th inning — his second of the game — and the Red Sox beat the Yankees 8-7 on Sunday night.

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez won’t be ready to rejoin the team any time soon. The team said in a statement that Rodriguez has a Grade 1 strain of his left quadriceps muscle.

Elsewhere in the American League, Tampa Bay beat Toronto 4-3. Cleveland topped Minnesota 7-1. Detroit slid by Kansas City 4-1. Seattle cruised ahead of Houston 12-5. Oakland shut out the Angels 6-0 and Baltimore doubled up Texas 4-2.

All-Star Break Over, Red Sox To Host Yankees

Baseball's four-day break for the All-Star Game ends tonight with a full slate of games. The AL East-leading Red Sox are hosting the Yankees, who start the second half of the season six games behind Boston. The Red Sox play 13 of their next 16 games at home, where they are 31-16 this season.

In golf news, it is another sunny day along the Scottish coast. Zach Johnson heads into the second round of the British Open with a one-shot lead. He opened with a 5-under 66. The weather has been unseasonably warm and dry. It's expected to stay that way through the weekend.

For Rivera, An Emotional Last All-Star Game

American League pitchers shut down the best of the National League and blanked the Senior Circuit 3-0 to win baseball's annual midsummer classic, the All-Star Game.

The emotional highlight was 43-year-old New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, the all-time leader with 638 career saves. Rivera, who is retiring at the end of the season, received a 90-second standing ovation from fans, teammates and opposing players when he entered the game. Rivera pitched a perfect eighth. He was named MVP.

With Shaky Goalies, Blackhawks Tie Series 2-2

The Boston Bruins were able to claw back from deficits of 1-0, 4-2, and 5-4 during the most entertaining game of this year's Stanley Cup Finals. Brent Seabrook gave Boston no time to mount another comeback. Seabrook scored at 9:51 of overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 6-5 win over the Bruins, tying the series at two games apiece. Game 5 is Saturday in Chicago.
