NY college cancels men's soccer season over hazing

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — The men's soccer team at an upstate New York college has had its spring season cancelled after school officials said players were involved in hazing during a party last November.

Officials at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs announced Thursday that 24 players and four other students were disciplined for participating in an initiation known as "rookie night." Details of the hazing haven't been released.

New Law Would Help Police Track Parolees

Police in the city of Troy may soon get a bit of "enforcement assistance" with a new local law that supporters say would help control crime.  

Troy's City Council has been discussing creating a registration program for parolees that would require individuals fresh out of prison who take up residence in town to register with the Chief of Police.

Emancipation Proclamation on display in Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Abraham Lincoln's Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation is on display in Albany, wrapping up the historic document's tour of New York state.

The two-day exhibit opened Friday in the War Room on the second floor of the state Capitol. It features the only surviving version of the document in Lincoln's handwriting. The display also includes historical background and interpretation of the document, which was issued by Lincoln on Sept. 22, 1862.

The final Emancipation Proclamation was issued and took effect on Jan. 1, 1863.

Jobs cut in News10ABC-fox23News consolidation

Television viewers in the Albany area may have been checking to see if they were on the right channel as familiar local news personalities began showing up on other stations.

Two Capital Region TV stations have merged their news departments.  Amy Cutler is one of WTEN ABC News 10's on-screen reporters now doing double-duty appearing on Fox's WXXA. Viewers got their first hint something was happening in December when Cutler appeared on Fox23 covering the Sandy Hook School Shooting in Connecticut.

Uncle Sam statues to decorate his NY 'birthplace'

TROY, N.Y. (AP) — Uncle Sam statues will begin popping up this spring in the upstate New York city that lays claim to being the birthplace of the iconic symbol for the United States.

Thirty white fiberglass statues depicting a man with a goatee and wearing a tall hat were delivered last week to downtown Troy. Artists will decorate the life-sized statues, which will be installed on Troy streets in April.
