Pastor in Same-Sex Parent Dispute Remains Jailed

A Virginia pastor who interfered with a custody dispute involving a lesbian couple in Vermont will remain jailed for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury.

Forty-seven-year-old Kenneth Miller was convicted last summer of helping Lisa Miller and her daughter leave the country in September 2009 to avoid sharing custody with her former partner.

Ex Vermont Partner of Missing Mom Expected Child Visit

The Vermont woman once joined in a civil union with a woman who has been missing almost three years had been expecting a visit with their daughter the weekend after the two left the country.

Janet Jenkins of Fair Haven testified Friday in the trial of Kenneth Miller, the Mennonite pastor from Stuarts Draft, Va., who is charged with helping Lisa Miller and her daughter Isabella flee the country on Sept. 22, 2009.

Jenkins told the jury that when she went to pick up her daughter Isabella three days later, but she wasn't home.

Prosecutors Track Cell Phone in Custody Case

Federal prosecutors in a Vermont court say a cell phone used by a Virginia businessman moved from Virginia to New York while a woman and her daughter were fleeing the country so the woman could avoid sharing custody of the child with her former lesbian partner in Vermont.

Trial Gets Under Way in Civil Union Custody Case

Federal prosecutors in Vermont say a Virginia pastor worked with a number of other people to help a woman flee the United States with her daughter rather than share custody of the girl with the mother's former lesbian partner.

The trial of 46-year-old Kenneth Miller of Stuarts Draft, Va., opened Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Burlington. In his opening statement, Miller's lawyer said he will prove his client believed Lisa Miller had full custody of daughter Isabella.

Jury Selection Starts in Civil Union Custody Case

About two dozen witnesses could be called in the Vermont trial of a Virginia man charged with helping a woman flee the United States with her daughter rather than share custody of the girl with her former lesbian partner.

Attorneys in the case of Kenneth Miller, of Stuarts Draft, Va., listed some of the possible witnesses Tuesday during jury selection. Opening statements are expected Wednesday. The trial is expected to take six days.
