McKinney Lone GOP CT Gubernatorial Candidate To Back Gun Bill

Connecticut Senate Minority Leader John McKinney (R-CT)

Connecticut Senate Minority Leader John McKinney is defending the gun control bill passed in the wake of Newtown school massacre, setting himself apart from four other Republican gubernatorial candidates appearing at the first debate of this year's election.

Given the Democratic majority in the General Assembly, McKinney said "it wasn't a matter of whether they were going to pass a bill." Rather, McKinney said he and other Republicans helped to make a product that's "better for the state of Connecticut."

CT Lawmakers Want Gun Registration Law Extended

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Several Republican state lawmakers say Connecticut should extend the looming deadline for when people have to register certain weapons and ammunition magazines under a new law.

Rep. Rob Sampson of Wolcott said lawful gun owners are trying to follow the law, enacted in response to last year's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. But he said certain parts of the law are "vague and extremely subjective."

Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against Conn. Gun Law

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a national gun industry group's lawsuit challenging a wide-ranging firearms law passed by Connecticut in response to the shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall in New Haven ruled Monday that the Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation Inc. doesn't have legal standing to challenge how state officials approved the law.

Obama promoting gun legislation in Connecticut

President Barack Obama is trying to boost the chances of gun legislation that could be in jeopardy this week with a trip to the home state of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Obama is visiting the Connecticut capital of Hartford, where last week the governor signed a law with widespread restrictions on firearms. The Senate could take up national legislation this week.

Obama plans to meet with Sandy Hook families and argue that lawmakers have an obligation to the children killed and other victims of gun violence to act on his proposals.

Conn. lawmakers unveil bipartisan gun control plan

Connecticut lawmakers say they hope their announcement of proposals to curb gun violence sends a message to Congress and other state legislators that bipartisan agreement on gun control is possible. 

Legislative leaders yesterday revealed proposals spurred by the Dec. 14 Newtown school shooting following weeks of bipartisan, closed-door negotiations. A vote is expected Wednesday in the General Assembly, where passage is all but assured.
