NY Budget Passes

New York State lawmakers were  finished work on the state budget Thursday evening, completing the spending plan three days before the deadline.   

The Assembly held a marathon day of voting to wrap up work on the budget , after the State Senate finished up in a midnight session earlier.

Debate on the floor included criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, over $90 million dollars in cuts to providers of services for the developmentally disabled. Lawmakers have set up a task force to try to mitigate the cuts.

NY Senate approved budget

After an all night session, the New York State senate approved a $136 billion budget.

The Assembly is planning to vote on the budget tomorrow and if it is passed, it will be the third time in a row the state has met its deadline.

The budget would raise the minimum wage to $9 over three years and offers a $350 rebate to families with children. It includes a tax credit to businesses that pay the new minimum wage and will also increase school aid by about $1 billion.

New York State Senate finishes work on state budget

The New York State Senate finished its work on the state budget in an overnight session at the Capitol.

The governor and legislative leaders decided to abide by the normal procedures and let the budget bills “age” for three days before voting, so that anyone who is interested could read them.  Some of the bills were not printed until Sunday evening, which made them eligible for voting on Wednesday. Senators abided by the letter, if not the spirit of the law.

Senate Passes Some Budget bills, Assembly Waits Until Thursday

The New York State Senate held a rare Sunday session at the Capitol, in an attempt to get the state budget finished on time in the midst of major religious holidays.

The State Senate met to vote on three previously agreed upon budget bills, in an attempt to finish the spending plan without interfering with the Easter and Passover holidays.  Senate Finance Committee Chair John DeFrancisco explained it on the Senate floor.

“We’re trying to jumpstart the process,” said De Francisco, who says starting early gives everyone “ample time” for debating the bills.

Leaders still working on timely New York state budget

Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders continued to meet to try to complete the state budget by next week.

Legislative leaders were tight lipped as they emerged for the third day in a row from private talks with Cuomo.

“Do you have a recording from yesterday?” joked Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. “Just play it back.”

Silver says the governor and leaders are “making progress."

Poll: 41 pct in NY say Cuomo gun law 'about right'

The poll by NBC New York, the Wall Street Journal and Marist College found 19 percent of New Yorkers felt the gun law didn't go far enough.

Director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion Lee Miringoff says opposition to the law upstate effected the Governors approval numbers.

Overall, 56 percent felt Cuomo was doing a good or excellent job. That's down from 59 percent in October.

Thursday's poll questioned 814 adults Feb. 26 to Feb. 28, shortly after the new gun law was enacted. It has a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.

Governor Announces Funding to Rebuild Irene Destroyed Fire Station in Adirondacks

Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Keene this afternoon to announce that the state will step in and provide funding for a new fire station in the wake of FEMA pull backs on funding.

Officials in Essex County have been working to rebuild the Keene fire station since it’s destruction during Tropical Storm Irene.

New Environmental Coalition Urges Cuomo to Drop Fracking Plan

The state’s major environmental groups have formed a new coalition, urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to reject a plan to begin hydrofracking in select counties in New York’s Southern Tier.  Capitol Correspondent Karen DeWitt reports… 

Peter Hudiburg of the town of Plymouth, in Chenango County joined major environmental groups like the Sierra Club and Hudson Riverkeeper in a rally to persuade Governor Andrew Cuomo to drop a plan to begin limited hydrofracking in the state’s Southern Tier.

“Governor Cuomo, the science is in,” he shouted. “This is a very dangerous technology.”

Cuomo Administration Eases Smoke Ban

The Cuomo administration is suspending its restrictions on smoking in parks, pools, beaches and historic sites after a smokers' rights groups objected. WAMC’s Dave Lucas reports.

The administration says Tuesday the measures will be voluntary for at least two months while a full rule-making process including public comment is concluded.
