Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty At Proctors Through 10/20

Matthew Bourne, the world’s most successful dance choreographer, and his company New Adventures, are bringing their spectacular and lavish UK production of Sleeping Beauty to a mere seven US cities -- and one of them is Schenectady – where the show will run at Proctors through the 20th of this month.

With Sleeping Beauty, Bourne returns to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of the composer’s ballet masterworks that started in 1992 with Nutcracker! and continued in 1995, with the international hit Swan Lake. In this Sleeping Beauty, the traditional tale of good vs. evil and rebirth is turned upside-down, creating a supernatural love story, across the decades, that even the passage of time itself cannot hinder.

We are joined by dancers, Hannah Vassalo and Christopher Marney. Hannah dances the role of Princess Aurora, and Christopher is the associate choreographer and dances the role of Count Lilac.

Ben Vereen at Belleayre Music Festival

Actor, singer, dancer Ben Vereen will display his full-range talents at the Belleayre Music Festival during his one-man show, Steppin' Out with Ben Vereen.

Ben's performance is a unique blend of artistry, combining a tribute to Broadway, Frank Sinatra, and a very special tribute to Sammy Davis Jr. Featuring hit songs such as "Defying Gravity," "Mr. Bojangles," "Something's Coming" and "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries," Ben Vereen's "Steppin' Out" is a contemporary and timeless journey through the Broadway songbook.

After formally studying his craft and earning steady work on Broadway, Ben earned critical recognition for his dazzling performance in Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin (Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical) and in Funny Lady. Ben was introduced to a more mainstream audience with his crafty portrayal of Chicken George in the landmark TV miniseries Roots, receiving an Emmy nomination.

He joins us to talk about his impression on the revival of Pippin, Bob Fosse, and more.

Monica Bill Barnes Company at PS21

The Monica Bill Barnes Company will be at PS21 in Chatham on Friday and Saturday night with two productions - Luster and Suddenly Summer Somewhere. Both pieces were choreographed by Monica Bill Barnes and performed by Monica and Anna Bass.

Luster premiered at The American Dance Festival in July 2012. Featuring themes of endurance and triumph, this duet highlights autobiographical moments of the performers, who are entering their tenth year of dancing together.

In Suddenly Summer Somewhere, two small women stand on top of a dining room table. In silence, carefully navigating the table top, they send silverware crashing to the floor. Simultaneously hilarious and painful, the piece explores how the passage of time affects the collective lives of two people.
