Daytona 500

Denny Hamlin's photo finish

Denny Hamlin won the Daytona 500 on Sunday by just one-hundredth of a second ahead of Martin Truex Jr., the closest finish in race history. Hamlin paced the field for 95 of 200 laps, but he was running fourth on the final lap before making a strong move to the outside, nudging teammate Matt Kenseth and then powering by Truex. It was the first victory for Toyota in the annual race, and the first for team owner Joe Gibbs since 1993.

In the NBA, Cleveland beat New York 101-83, Atlanta bested Milwaukee 97-86, Detroit defeated Washington 106-86, Indiana won against Golden State 104-98, Orlando topped Philadelphia 103-98, Oklahoma City trumped Denver 119-94, Dallas bested Charlotte 92-81, Memphis beat Portland 98-92, and it was the Lakers over Boston 118-111.

Yesterday was a big day for Nascar as Jimmie Johnson snatched the lead position, winning his second Daytona 500. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished second and Danica Patrick, who began the race as the first female pole sitter, finished in eighth-place.

There were several crashes but none approached the magnitude of the wreck that injured more than two dozen fans a day earlier in a second-tier race on the same track.
