NY Official Pushes Feds To Recognize Gay Marriages

New York state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli is wielding the power of the state's $160 billion pension fund to urge President Barack Obama to order federal agencies in every state to recognize gay marriages performed in New York.

It could be a big push in DiNapoli's effort to get major companies that do business with the fund to adopt anti-discrimination measures in providing benefits for gay couples.

Supreme Court hears same-sex marriage arguments

WAMC news intern Eric Krupke reports from Washington D.C. on the same-sex marriage debate taking place in the Supreme Court.

Hundreds gathered on the steps of the Supreme Court to show their support for Edie Windsor, the plaintiff in a case challenging the federal government's Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA.

Nine states and the District of Columbia currently recognize same sex marriage, but DOMA prohibits same sex couples in these states from receiving certain benefits federal government grants to opposite sex married couples.

Mass AG asking court to throw out marriage law

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley plans to be at the U.S. Supreme Court for arguments on the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

The law prohibits same-sex couples in states where gay marriage is legal from receiving an array of federal benefits available to heterosexual married couples. The justices are hearing the case today.

Coakley and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman filed a brief with the high court last month calling for DOMA to be struck down.

Vigil Held On Eve Of Supreme Court Gay Marriage Cases

Supporters of gay rights participated in vigils and rallies held in cities across the country on the eve of the Supreme Court hearing arguments in two same-sex marriage cases.

   While about 50 people gathered around the front steps of the Federal Court House in Springfield to cheer and applaud speakers, Charlie Rogers stood like a sentinel on the curb facing oncoming traffic on State Street. He held a hand-painted sign reading “Overturn DOMA”

Vermont House Passes Same-Sex Health Coverage Bill

The Vermont House has voted to require out-of-state companies that offer health coverage to the spouses of opposite-sex married couples to provide the same benefits to same-sex couples.
