Village Mayor, Deputy Mayor Face Bribery Charges

In Rockland County the mayor and deputy mayor of the Village of Spring Valley face bribery charges in connection with a Spring Valley Real Estate Project Conspiracy, which, according to the filed complaint, alleges the two accepted money and property in exchange for using their official positions to approve a real estate deal in which the mayor had an undisclosed financial interest. After being charged with bribery in a real-estate development scheme as part of a larger political corruption case in New York, it is still unclear whether the mayor of Rockland County’s Spring Valley will remain in office.

Village of Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret face bribery and mail fraud charges in connection with a federal corruption case stretching from New York City to Spring Valley to Albany. New York State Senator Malcolm Smith and New York City Councilman Dan Halloran were arrested today in an alleged plot to rig the New York City mayor's race. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara says in a statement that Smith "tried to bribe his way" into a shot at the New York City mayoral race. Bharara says Smith "drew up the game plan" and Halloran found party chairmen who were open to receiving bribes. The arrests included four others, including two from the Hudson Valley’s Rockland County.
