Boston Takes Game 1 Of The World Series, And Unapologetically

David Ortiz, Mike Napoli and Jon Lester were quite a combination for the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night.

Ortiz and Napoli drove in three runs apiece as Boston clobbered the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 at Fenway Park. Ortiz hit a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly after Napoli put the Red Sox ahead with a three-run double in the first inning. Ortiz's got a sac-fly in the second inning and a home run five innings later. The two-run blast drove in Dustin Pedroia, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI single and two runs scored.

Red Sox In, Rays Out

In baseball, the Boston Red Sox have played themselves into the American League Championship Series for the 10th time, doing it with excellent pitching and a few timely hits.

Shane Victorino singled home the tiebreaking run and Xander Bogaerts scored twice as the Red Sox pulled out a 3-1 win over Tampa Bay in Game 4 of the division series. The Rays led 1-0 until Bogaerts scored the tying run on a wild pitch, moments before Victorino drove in Jacoby Ellsbury. Dustin Pedroia added a sacrifice fly in the ninth to cap the scoring.

Is A-Rod Giving Up The Fight?

Baseball's non-waiver trade deadline has passed, but the clock is ticking for possible steroid suspensions.

ESPN reports that after Alex Rodriguez’s lawyer said his client would fight any discipline from Major League Baseball for alleged steroid use, A-Rod's representatives are now negotiating a possible settlement that could result in a lengthy suspension. The Yankees expect Rodriguez to be accused of recruiting other athletes for the clinic, attempting to obstruct MLB's investigation, and not being truthful with MLB in the past.

Non-Waiver Trade Deadline, Sox Move On Jake Peavy

It’s July 31 and in baseball today is the non-waiver trade deadline. As the clock struck down to the final moments the Red Sox decided to move on White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy as part of a three-team, seven-player deal. The Red Sox acquired reliever Brayan Villarreal from Detroit and sent shortstop Jose Iglesias to the Tigers.

Hernandez To Appear In Probable Cause Hearing

Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez is due to make another appearance in court in the murder case against him. A probable cause hearing for Hernandez is scheduled for this afternoon. He has pleaded not guilty to murder in the death last month of Odin Lloyd.

For Rivera, An Emotional Last All-Star Game

American League pitchers shut down the best of the National League and blanked the Senior Circuit 3-0 to win baseball's annual midsummer classic, the All-Star Game.

The emotional highlight was 43-year-old New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, the all-time leader with 638 career saves. Rivera, who is retiring at the end of the season, received a 90-second standing ovation from fans, teammates and opposing players when he entered the game. Rivera pitched a perfect eighth. He was named MVP.

Bruins And Stars Engage In 7-Player Trade

Sports fans in Boston have some good reasons to be excited.

In hockey, the Bruins and Dallas Stars completed a 7-player blockbuster trade. Its Tyler Seguin, Rich Peverley and Ryan Button to the Stars for forward Loui Eriksson and prospects Reilly Smith, Matt Fraser and Joe Morrow.

In the NBA, the Celtics will introduce former Butler coach Brad Stevens as the team's new coach today at a news conference. The New York Knicks are also keeping J.R. Smith after agreeing to a new deal.

Nets Takes Center Stage At NBA Draft With Celtics Deal

The NBA draft was Thursday night and the Brooklyn Nets made the biggest news. A person with knowledge of the talks confirmed a Yahoo Sports report that the Nets and Celtics were working on a trade that would bring Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry to Brooklyn. This comes days after losing their head coach Doc Rivers to the Clippers. The trade can't be completed until July 10th.

The Cleveland Cavaliers had first pick at Barclays Center and chose UNLV forward Anthony Bennett. Bennett is the first Canadian to be taken No. 1 in the NBA draft.

Cashman: Alex Should Just... Shut Up

Third baseman Alex Rodriguez is in hot water with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman after he tweeted that his hip surgeon cleared him to play in rehabilitation games. Cashman told ESPN.com that when the Yankees want to announce something, they will and added that "Alex should just shut...up."

Checking baseball news, in interleague play, Daniel Murphy hit a go-ahead single in the eighth after being denied a homer two innings earlier, and the Mets rallied to beat the Yankees 2-1 Monday night for their second straight home win after losing eight in a row. Dustin Pedroia and Mike Napoli homered in the first inning as the Red Sox jumped to an early lead and coasted to a 9-3 victory over the Phillies.
