Cox Reelected To Lead New York GOP

Sep 21, 2015

New York Republicans reelected Ed Cox to a fourth term as their party’s chair Monday, while GOP members talked of strategies toward winning more seats in statewide races.

It may be hard to believe now, but 51 years ago, a presidential candidate's chances were severely damaged by divorce. In 1963, Nelson Rockefeller, then-governor of New York, married Margaretta Fitler Murphy, a socialite 18 years years his junior, who became known as Happy Rockefeller. Both the governor and his new wife were divorced, and there were tabloid accounts of an extramarital affair. Those reports all but ended Gov. Rockefeller's chances for the Republican presidential nomination in 1964. On WAMC's Capitol Connection this week, Alan Chartock spoke with New York State GOP chairman Ed Cox about Happy Rockefeller, who died yesterday at her home in Tarrytown at at the age of 88.

The primaries are over and the general election in November is still weeks away, but already many in the political world are thinking about the next significant contest on the horizon- the 2014 statewide elections.  State GOP Chairman Ed Cox, in an interview with public radio and television, says he’s working on finding a Republican candidate to challenge Governor Andrew Cuomo, and he says several are interested.

Five names were recently floated as potential candidates to challenge New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the 2014 election. Four of the five are in the Hudson Valley.

Ed Cox is chairman of the New York State Republican Party.

One is Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino.

He refers to running for county executive. And the federal agency he says he is battling is the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, over aspects of an affordable housing agreement. As to whether he is ruling out a run for governor, Astorino replies:

New York state Republican Party chair Ed Cox spoke with WAMC today about Tuesday's electoral results. Among the topics discussed with Capitol Connection host Alan Chartock were the GOP's losses in the Senate and presidential race.

Republicans, including the powerful chair of the New York state party, are beginning to flock to Tampa for next week’s convention. WAMC’s Ian Pickus has more.

Chairman Ed Cox has run the state party since 2009, and despite a Democratic enrollment advantage, has overseen some key victories: the Republican takeover of the state Senate after two years of troubled Democratic rule, and several Congressional seat pickups during the 2010 midterms.
