Paul Elisha : Revisionist history in U.S. electoral politics

In the introduction to his massive chronicle of combat, entitled “Men At War,” Ernest Hemmingway described his subject as… “…that thing which no one knows about who has not done it.”   Much later in the sequence of events, he modified his unmitigated statement with this qualifier:  “As they get further and further away from a war they’ve taken part in, all men have a tendency to make it more as they wish it had been, than how it really was.”

Vox Pop : Open Forum – Election 2012 : 8/1/12

With Election Day only about four months away, President Barack Obama and presumed Republican candidate Mitt Romney have kicked their campaigns into high gear.

The week so far seems to be a loser for Romney, who topped the headlines not for suggesting bold policy changes, but for a series of campaign gaffes that called into question his stances on race in America and international relations.

Jimmy Vielkind - The Albany Times Union

Government reform groups say there are a number of loopholes in New York’s campaign finance regulations, and that LLC’s, or Limited Liability Corporations, are part of the problem. Jimmy Vielkind of the Albany Times Union has been looking into these organizations and how they can be used to get around some of the campaign donation limits. WAMC’s Brian Shields spoke to Vielkind about his front page story in today’s paper.

Planned Parenthood Launches Anti-Romney TV Ad

Planned Parenthood is launching a TV ad campaign in three battleground states suggesting that women's rights would suffer if Republican Mitt Romney is elected president. The political arm of the women's health care organization has endorsed Democratic President Barack Obama for re-election. WAMC’s Dave Lucas has details…

The group announced Wednesday, a day after Romney claimed the GOP presidential nomination, that it would spend $1.4 million to air its ad in Florida, Iowa and Virginia, as well as Washington, D.C.

NY Court OKs New Legislature Lines for Fall Elections

A panel of federal judges says the new election district lines drawn by the Senate and Assembly majorities will be used in the fall elections. WAMC's Dave Lucas reports…

The decision is a critical win for Senate Republicans hoping to secure their slim majority in the chamber despite a Democratic voter advantage of nearly 2-to-1 in the state.

Good-government groups have criticized the Senate GOP redistricting plan. They say it continues a tradition of twisting district lines to protect the power of the majority parties.
