Eli Manning

Keith Strudler: A Beginning And An End For Eli Manning

Dec 27, 2017

The beginning of 2018 may also be the end of an era. Such could be the reality for Eli Manning and the legions of New York Giants fans who have adopted him as their own, especially after winning two Super Bowls against the New England Patriots. It’s a fair assessment that older brother Peyton was a better NFL QB, but it would be hard to imagine anyone – Manning or not – more beloved by his home fans.

A sports memorabilia dealer who sued the New York Giants and quarterback Eli Manning for allegedly doctoring equipment to make it appear game-worn has scored a legal victory. A federal judge in Newark ruled Tuesday that Eric Inselberg can proceed with his lawsuit in state court.

The Giants had sought to have the case moved to federal court, claiming part of Inselberg's lawsuit involves federal patent issues.

Inselberg filed the lawsuit in January. He was among a group of memorabilia dealers accused of selling counterfeit jerseys following an FBI sting.

In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers have moved into a first-place tie with New Orleans in the NFC South. Cam Newton threw for 273 yards and a touchdown as the Panthers won 30-20 over the New York Jets.

The Miami Dolphins had a 24-20 breakthrough victory over the AFC East-leading New England Patriots. A fourth-down pass from Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was intercepted by reserve safety Michael Thomas in the end zone with 2 seconds left, and Miami held on to win.

In the NFL, Andre Brown ran for a pair of touchdowns and Justin Tuck recorded four sacks of Robert Griffin III as the New York Giants downed Washington 24-17. Eli Manning was 22 of 28 for 235 yards and a TD to help the Giants overcome an early 14-0 deficit.

Elsewhere, Stephen Gostkowski booted a pair of 53-yard field goals in the fourth quarter to give New England a 34-31 win over Houston.

Giants Earn First Victory, Finally

In the NFL, the New York Giants finally ran into a team they can beat, leaving Tampa Bay and Jacksonville as the NFL's only winless teams.

Eli Manning went the entire game without an interception and the Giants smothered Minnesota's offense in a 23-7 win over the Vikings at the Meadowlands. Manning threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Reuben Randle and was 23 of 39 for 200 yards. Manning entered the game with a league-high 15 interceptions.

For Giants Nightmare Conintues, Now 0-6

In the NFL, the New York Giants played one of their two best games of the season on Thursday, but it wasn't enough for them to avoid their first 0-6 start in 37 years.

Jay Cutler threw two touchdown passes to Brandon Marshall and the Chicago Bears intercepted Eli Manning three times in a 27-21 win over the Giants. Marshall had both of his scoring grabs in the second quarter to help the Bears build a 27-14 lead.

Brandon Jacobs became the first Giant to rush for more than 55 yards this season, finishing with 106 and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

In the NFL, Peyton Manning is now 3-0 in the NFL against his kid brother.

Peyton Manning completed 30 of 43 passes for 307 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions as the Denver Broncos whipped the New York Giants 41-23. He fared better than his brother, Eli, who had 362 passing yards but was intercepted four times.

Rookie EJ Manuel picked up his first NFL win by hitting Stevie Johnson for a two-yard touchdown pass with two seconds left to lead Buffalo past Carolina 24-23.
