In a highly-anticipated move, the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities made cuts to Eversource’s proposed electricity rate hike last week. The DPU decreased Western Massachusetts Electric Company’s request for $34.7 million by 30 percent. Western Massachusetts Electric Company is an Eversource subsidiary. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief JD Allen spoke with attorney Kevin Conroy, of Foley Hoag in Boston. Conroy says the rate hike will disproportionally impact Western Massachusetts’ 209,000 ratepayers.

While activists are still celebrating the suspension of one major natural gas pipeline, they are also battling to stop another one in the Northeast.

Eversource Energy announced Monday that it finished installing 40 “smart switches” designed to limit the impact of power outages for 17,000 customers in western Massachusetts.

Electricity prices should fall in western Massachusetts this summer.  The region’s two major investor-owned electric utility companies have filed plans with the state’s regulatory board to cut rates. Also, there should be no concerns about power shortages this summer.

Eversource, formerly known as Western Massachusetts Electric Company, announced this week a plan to cut rates by more than 31 percent. The company said the average customer, using 500 kilowatt-hours a month, can expect to save $22 a month.
