Ventfort Hall Mansion and the Gilded Age Museum in Lenox, Massachusetts recently named a new executive director. Working in the museum since 2009, most recently as operations manager, Beverly Rainey assumes a position that has been vacant for the past four years. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief Jim Levulis spoke with Rainey about the nonprofit’s mission as part of The White House’s Save America’s Treasures program working in a 19th century building that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In it, she tells the story of her eccentric, fractured family; her 1980s childhood of bohemian neglect in the squalid attic of Rokeby, the family’s Hudson Valley Mansion; and her escape from the clan. Aldrich reaches back to the Gilded Age when the Astor legacy began to come undone, leaving the Aldrich branch of the family penniless and squabbling over what was left.
