Herbert Wolff Reviews "An American Tragedy"

Jul 31, 2014

In our youth, many of us were compelled to read a particular novel written by an American author.  I don’t mean compelled as a school assignment, but compelled when the work was deemed an American classic – bringing to light areas of our culture that we were not likely to personally experience.  Think Grapes of Wrath or Catcher in the Rye.

Herbert Wolff Reviews "Ariadne In Naxos"

Jul 31, 2014

The literary device of a play-within-a-play has long charmed audiences – even before Shakespeare used the construct in Hamlet and numerous other works.  So, it comes as no surprise that Ariadne Auf Naxos – an opera-within-an-opera – is an appealing prospect.  There is the score by Richard Strauss…a delectably dicey comedic plot, worked into a libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal…and the universally intriguing theme of transformation.

Herbert Wolff Reviews "Carousel"

Jul 25, 2014

In the annals of modern musical theater, no composers are more lauded – and more performed – than Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers.  To many theatergoers – including this reviewer – Carousel is the finest of all their compositions...not as ground-breaking as Oklahoma…nor as appealing perhaps as The Sound of Music and South Pacific.  But for the diversity of the musical score, and the lyrics that give depth to the characters and the story, my pick is Carousel -- which is now playing at Glimmerglass Music Festival.

Herbert Wolff Reviews "Camelot"

Jul 28, 2013

Theater reviewer Herbert Wolff takes a look at the Glimmerglass production of "Camelot,"  running this summer in Cooperstown, NY.

Carin Gilfry and Alex Lawrence met in 2011 as Young Artists with the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, NY. The mezzo-soprano and baritone fell in love, were married, and now get to balance those facts with their very busy and far-flung opera careers.

Alex is singing the role of Belfiore in Verdi's King for a Day at Glimmerglass this summer and during the year he has a contract with the Zurich Opera in Switzerland.

Carin recently performed in La Perichole with New York City Opera, and covered in Le Nozze di Figaro in Los Angeles.

The couple joins us now to talk about life as married opera singers and about The Glimmerglass Festival.
