Gun Groups Prepare Lawsuit Against NYS

Four gun-rights groups have filed a Notice of Claim in New York State, challenging the gun measure Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law earlier this month.

The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association; the Westchester County Firearms Owners Association, based in Rye Brook; the Sportsmen’s Association for Firearms Education, in Commack, Long Island; and AR15.com, a web site run out of Farmington, in upstate New York, filed a notice of claim Tuesday with the New York State Attorney General’s office. As the nation ponders how to stop the next mass shooting, the gun rights movement offers a straight-forward formula, laid out famously by NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," LaPierre said last month, as his group responded to the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

One Man's Story

In Washington state, one such "good guy" — a private citizen who drew his gun in defense of others — paid a heavy price.

Vermont Town to Take up Firearms Ordinance

Town officials in Highgate, Vermont are planning to consider an ordinance to bar recreational shooting in residential areas.

The ordinance was requested by residents of several streets who say neighbors firing guns on inadequate backyard ranges are creating a safety hazard.

Conn. Gun Buyback Program Nets Hundreds of Weapons

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — A gun buyback program that began last month in Connecticut's biggest city has netted more than 500 weapons, including several dozen assault-style weapons.

Bridgeport city officials say more than $150,000 has been donated in the form of cash and grocery store gift cards to buy guns back from people.

The latest session of the program is taking place on Saturday and Mayor Bill Finch says it will continue for as long as necessary.

Police are offering up to $200 for a working handgun and $75 for rifles.
