Democrats Unveil Bill To Ban Assault-Style Weapons

As they said they would following the Dec. 14 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Democrats today unveiled legislation that would ban assault-style weapons.

The lead lawmaker, Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, has summed up the legislation's key points this way:

Deerpark Board opposes state gun law

HUGUENOT – The Deerpark Town Board voted Tuesday night to condemn the state’s new gun law.

Town Supervisor Karl Brabenec said the board’s opposition is unanimous.

“We are basically saying that the legislation that was passed by our state government officials and signed by our government is basically unconstitutional according to the Second Amendment,” Brabanec said.

The local lawmakers praised Republican Senators William Larkin and John Bonacic and Assemblywoman Annie Rabbitt for voting against the new gun law.

NRA: NY's quick gun law passage nixed opposition

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The National Rifle Association says the secret negotiations and lightning-fast passage of New York's tough new gun control laws squelched the powerful gun lobby's ability to mount opposition.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he had to engineer quick enactment to prevent a counterproductive buying spree of now-outlawed guns.

The legislation was introduced and signed into law in less than two days.

NY Gun Law Funds School Safety Initiatives

A month after the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown,  New York State has led the nation in gun law reform. One change coming involves money - the gun bill passed into law this week provides additional funding for school security measures.

Safety is paramount when it comes to our schools and schoolchildren - "the NY Safe Act of 2013" will send money to public schools to pay for a variety of safety and security features that are designed to deter, slow down or identify an intruder.

Mass. Gov. Proposes New Laws on Gun Ownership

The Governor of Massachusetts has filed new legislation that would introduce stricter regulations on gun ownership. The bill includes strict background checks and closing licensing loopholes. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief Lucas Willard reports…

Governor Patrick announced the legislation just over a month after the shooting deaths of children and educators in the massacre in Newtown, Conn, and only one day after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the SAFE Act, putting tighter restrictions on gun ownership in the Empire State.

Gun-rights backers expect suits against NY gun law

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) —Gun rights advocates expect court challenges to New York's tightest-in-the-nation restrictions on guns.

A Republican state senator from Saratoga says her online petition for repealing the provisions has drawn more than 37,000 signatures since yesterday. Sen. Kathy Marchione says if legislative attempts at repeal fails, she'll go to court.

Besides banning assault rifles, the state law calls for mandatory background checks for ammunition purchases and tries to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people who may be a threat.
