Extreme Heat Warning Issued For NYC Area

NEW YORK (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for the New York metropolitan area.

It says dangerous levels of heat and humidity are on tap for Sunday. The advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m.

An excessive heat warning is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it's 105 degrees or greater.

This Year Warmest On Record

The Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University reported Tuesday that  this is the hottest year on record in the region since record keeping started.

The regional Climate Center reports that the average temperature in the 12-state northeast region was 49.9 degrees from January through July,  the warmest seven-month period since 1895, when systematic record keeping began. NOAA Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University Climatologist Kathryn Vreeland notes that the data is strictly temperature measurements from land based observations.

It's official. It's Been Hot in the Northeast

No surprise for Northeast residents sweating out the summer after a winter barely touching their snow shovels: this is the hottest year on record in the region so far.

The Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University reported Tuesday that the average temperature in the 12-state region was 49.9 degrees from January through July. That's the warmest seven-month period since 1895, the year systematic record keeping began.
   
The second-warmest comparable period was 1921, when the seven-month average was 49.2 degrees.
